Creality Space Pi Filament Dryer Modification
Project Overview
The fan in my Creality Space Pi filament dryer began making excessive noise and was no longer functioning properly. Faced with replacing the fan, I decided to upgrade the entire setup and transform it into a Polydry-style filament dryer. This would allow integration with the ultimate cereal box filament storage system and its adapter.
Design and Modifications
To house the original Creality Pi components, I designed a custom box. Additionally, I created an adapter to better direct airflow from the fan through the heater block, which was an improvement over the stock configuration where the fan simply sat at the entrance with significant gaps around it.
I developed two adapter versions: one compatible with the stock 60x25mm fan and another for a replacement 70x30mm fan. To further enhance performance, I incorporated a fan speed controller into the system.
**note** The screen is held in with the original m2 screws.
Performance Testing
Initially, I was uncertain about the airflow produced by the new 70mm fan. However, operating it at 100% speed resulted in performance that exceeded the original fan’s capabilities, while also being substantially quieter. Even at 75% speed, the upgraded fan outperformed the stock setup.
Temperature and Airflow Results
With the dryer running in PLA mode at 50°C, the chamber’s ambient temperature at the front, where the return air is drawn back through the heater, stabilized around 107°F. The air temperature at the top of the container was approximately 20 degrees higher.
To optimize moisture removal, I modified the cereal box filament holder by adding an 8mm hole and plug on the top. This helps vent moist air out of the container effectively.
