This is an E-ink module for the Cooler Master Qube series, heavily inspired by the recent showing of a Steam Machine with an E-ink Module and a previous work of a casemod of mine from 2023.
It uses the default mounting mechanism for the Qube series, so installation is simple and robust thanks to the open design of the FreeForm 2.0 design philosophy, which makes building these modifications easier and pleasurable!
How to Print:
There are two parts, the Base and the Cover, both should print flat in bed with minimal supports, since the angles have been optimized for easier angles for 3D Printing and the angles of the case, but to achieve a better finish, you may want to print the Cover with the screen side up, away from the printing bed, to ensure a smooth curve while using supports.
Use whichever materials you have at hand, except if you add a powerful backlight, as depending on the kind of LEDs, heat might become a problem.
Assembly:
Attach the screen to the Cover with double sided tape, it works fine as these screens are light.
Attach the ESP-32 to the base with screws or double sided tape.
Plug the Screen flat cable to the controller board.
Attach a USB cable to the ESP32 and pass it through the hole in the Base towards the interior of the computer.
You may add a backlight to the interior of the Case, as there is enough space for a variety of LED's, even addressable ones! Just follow your preferred lighting tutorial for the board and LED type you have at hand and attach the LED's to the inside walls of the Case
Both parts should snap-fit together and no seams should be visible due to the use of the chamfer edges where both meet!
The preferred mounting location is the front panel, but you can mount the module to the sides, top or wherever the mounting points of the case are located! Do as you wish!
Compatible parts:
This was designed around the Waveshare line of E-Ink displays, more specifically the 7.5 inches model with a controller board, which is the one i have lying around, you can find these around sites like Aliexpress. You should buy one of each of the following:
Waveshare E-ink Display
OR a combo like this:
You may also use a myriad of softwares to control the screen, displaying vitals for your computer, or a picture frame, or a weather station, or develop something else entirely! The freedom is yours, just like the FreeForm design philosophy!
Other Notes
I've provided both 3MF and Step files, everything you need to print is in the 3MF file, while the Step file may be useful to adapt for other controller boards and for other screen sizes, or for any other adjustments you may need to do.
Another tip is to use an internal USB Header to plug the driver board, so that you may keep your cables tidy and not need to route a USB cable to the back of your motherboard, like one of these!
