🇩🇪 Deutsche Version (english below)

Description

I designed this T-nut for my Prusa XL because I wanted a quickly available and cost-effective alternative to the original parts. Especially for small attachments, I prefer being able to print replacement parts myself instead of ordering them.

The T-nut is designed as a multimaterial model and consists of a rigid PLA block combined with a flexible TPU spring. This combination allows the nut to be inserted into the aluminum profiles like the original and keeps it in place until it is secured with a screw.

Instead of a printed thread, the model is designed for an M4 heat-set insert. This provides a durable threaded solution without relying on printed threads. The nut is intended for use with the original Prusa M4×12 socket head screw, although the required screw length may vary depending on the mounted part.

So far, I have only used this T-nut for light attachments on the printer. It has not been tested under high mechanical loads or elevated temperatures, so the typical limitations of PLA should be considered.

Printing

I print the T-nut with a 0.2 mm layer height and use 100% infill to achieve maximum strength despite using PLA.

The model is designed for multimaterial printing and is produced in a single print using PLA for the block and TPU for the spring. Correct orientation is important: the TPU spring should lie flat on the print bed so that no supports are required.

Assembly

First, insert the M4 heat-set insert into the designated hole in the PLA block. The insert should sit flush and securely before further use.

After that, the T-nut can be inserted into the aluminum profile of the Prusa XL like the original part and secured with a suitable M4 screw.

Notes

I have only used this T-nut for light attachments on the Prusa XL so far. It has not been tested for high mechanical loads.

If the T-nut fits very tightly into the aluminum profile, a pair of tweezers can be used to assist with insertion. Alternatively, the small tabs on the TPU spring can be trimmed slightly to make insertion easier.

Since the main body is made of PLA, the typical material limitations should be taken into account, especially regarding temperature resistance and long-term load.
