Hello everybody,

this is my latest project: a CNC conversion of the Proxxon MF70 milling machine. The mill was upgraded using a combination of Ender 3 components and a few additional parts.

For control, I’m using the original 3D printer mainboard in a rather experimental setup, running a custom Marlin CNC firmware that I’m still actively working on. The hardware conversion itself, however, is already finished and working very well.

The Y-axis travel was increased to almost 90 mm, while the X and Z axes remain at 150 mm and 70 mm. To achieve the extended Y-axis travel, the Y-axis rail has to be moved slightly forward. In addition, a few extra threaded holes are required: two for mounting the electronics enclosure and two each for mounting the X and Z motors. These are the only modifications that need to be made to the mill itself.

All axes are driven by 40 mm NEMA17 stepper motors taken from an Ender 3, and the endstops are also reused from the printer. To keep backlash as low as possible, two F6-14M axial ball bearings are used on each axis.

I will show the full assembly process in a video at a later date, which will be linked here once it’s finished. For the future, I’m planning to upgrade the spindle to a brushless motor and switch the controller to FluidNC.
