It's no secret Nerf's Torrent has some issues. For the past year or so, I've been taking it to games so I can find and fix all of them. There was one persistent issue that had me stumped for months: the Torrent would be shooting fine, then all of a sudden it would start shooting these terribly low-power shots. We're talking like, sub-50 FPS shots. Worse yet, sometimes the problem would go away on its own! I'd take it apart, nothing would look wrong, put it back together, and it would be shooting fine again. This problem didn't show up until I put around 600 darts through the blaster, but once it started, it was persistent.
The issue? The front of the plunger has this big, complicated rubber pad on it. This pad is actually wider than the plunger, and so accounts for most of the air seal in the plunger tube. That also means there's a lot of drag when priming the blaster. The plunger only has two (really, one-and-a-half) tiny little notches to hold the pad in place, so it's not uncommon for the pad to work its way loose. When that happens, the Torrent loses a ton of power! I guess sometimes firing causes the plunger to slam into the pad, seating it back in, which is why the problem would sometimes go away on its own.
ANYWAY, now that you understand the problem, you can see how this plunger fixes the issue. The cap's geometry is designed to mate with the rubber pad, holding it firmly in place. If you print with my settings, the weight is about the same as the stock plunger, so you won't lose any power.
Hardware needed:
1x M3 bolt (must be at least 12mm, but can be longer)
1x M3 washer
1x M3 nut
Print in the orientation shown in the pictures (face down) using these settings:
Brim enabled
40% infill
Supports everywhere
3 perimeters
Probably works better with a more flexible material like PETG
You may want to use a file to clean the support scarring from the head. Inside the center column is a hex-shaped hole for the nut to sit in. Put the bolt and washer in the socket on the top of the cap. I recommend assembling face down to keep that nut in place. Make sure the cap is rotated correctly. It should mate with the rubber pad. You don't need to screw the cap down super tight, but do try yanking on the pad to make sure it's not going anywhere.
Since this is just a plunger replacement, it should also work with the Torrent RS2!
Update Oct 2026: The original cap printed in PETG can shatter if the blaster is dry-fired. I've added a variation that's more suitable to be printed in TPU. I've been using 95A TPU for mine, and it's held up well so far. Print in the same orientation as the original cap.
