A decorative dragon-themed screw-lock carabiner clip, designed as a fantasy accessory, keychain, bag charm, cosplay detail or display piece.
The model features a dragon head on the locking side, a curved dragon-body frame, and a threaded screw-lock style closure. The printed screw mechanism works and gives the object a nice mechanical feel.
This is a 3D printed decorative item and is not intended for climbing, safety use, load-bearing applications, pets, children’s equipment or any critical use.
Printed successfully in black PLA on an FDM printer. The dragon details are visible even at small size, while the screw-lock part gives the model a functional-looking finish.
Printing notes / instructions
Recommended material: PLA - PLA+ - PETG
Layer height: 0.12 mm for better dragon details, 0.16 mm for faster printing
Supports: required, especially around the dragon head, mouth, horns and inner overhangs
Infill: 20–30%
Walls: 3 or more recommended
Brim: recommended for better bed adhesion
Print orientation: printed standing/vertical as shown in the photos
The print orientation was chosen after several tests. Other orientations could reduce the amount of supports, but they inevitably damaged or worsened the final result. I preferred using more supports in exchange for a cleaner and better-looking print.
The knurled nut may be printed already mounted on the carabiner, but separating it after printing can require some force. For easier assembly, you can also print the nut separately and insert it afterward, taking advantage of the slight flexibility of the carabiner body.
If the thread feels tight, gently warm the threaded area with a hot air gun or industrial hair dryer. Do not overheat the PLA or make it soft. A few quick passes are enough to make the part warm. Then screw and unscrew the nut while it is still warm, without forcing it, until the movement becomes smooth. Once the part cools down, the thread should work properly.
