Hotend Airflow Guide for Flashforge AD5X

This small insert fits inside the Flashforge AD5X toolhead, directly behind the hotend, creating a more enclosed airflow path between the cooling fan and the heatsink.

The purpose of this guide is to reduce unnecessary air leakage inside the toolhead and direct more airflow where it matters most — through the hotend heatsink.

While I haven't performed controlled thermal testing, the airflow path is noticeably better defined, and the design is intended to improve cooling efficiency by minimizing bypass airflow.

In theory, this should help reduce the chance of heat creep, especially during long prints or when printing high-temperature materials.

Design

The stock toolhead leaves several open spaces around the heatsink where part of the airflow can escape instead of passing through the cooling fins.

This guide adds internal walls that:

  • Direct more air through the heatsink

  • Reduce airflow bypass

  • Improve airflow efficiency

  • Require no modifications to the toolhead

The insert is intentionally made as thin as possible to maximize compatibility with different hotend configurations.

Compatibility

Confirmed compatible with:

It is also designed to be compatible with the original Flashforge hotend and heatsink. Due to the thin profile of the guide, it should fit underneath the stock heatsink and be held in place by the factory mounting system.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to test this configuration myself, so feedback from users with the stock hotend is greatly appreciated.

Installation

Original Flashforge hotend

No additional hardware is required.

The guide sits beneath the stock heatsink and is secured automatically when the heatsink is installed using the original mounting hardware.

Bambu Lab A1 hotend (with YAHA adapter)

The guide is secured using two M2 screws.

Print Settings

Recommended:

  • Material: PETG

  • Layer height: 0.2 mm

  • 3 perimeters

  • No supports required

The model is small, prints quickly, and uses very little material.

Notes

This design is based on airflow optimization rather than laboratory measurements.

Although I cannot claim a specific temperature improvement, the guide eliminates several unnecessary airflow escape paths inside the toolhead and is designed to make more efficient use of the cooling fan.

If you test it with the stock Flashforge hotend or collect temperature data, I'd love to hear about your results.
