I've got loads of 4mm hex shank bits and only truly use a handful of them and don't need to haul them all around with me in my tool bag or let them take up space on my work bench.    So I took my 20 most useful and decided to make a carrier for them that would be safe enough to keep in my tool bag but also be handy enough in the shop.

I also don't like solid bricks with holes in them that hold bits because they are boring to me so I decided to make this unnecessarily complicated to give it a little flair or je ne sais quoi.   Along with the bit holder I made a little skadis friendly nest for it when not in use which could also work as a bench top holder.

Assembly is simple.  But in future versions I'd like to make it easier still.     Please note that tolerances vary from printer to printer so please ensure your printer has been calibrated appropriately for your chosen materials.   Most tolerances in this build give about .02 to .03mm of wiggle room.   Also if your bits don't fit at first do try a gentle sanding as I've found some cheaper hex bits are very liberal with what 4mm is.

I built mine in PETG but PLA would work just fine too.  Just don't leave it in a hot space for long.

Parts & Materials List:

Printed:

  • 1x Front

  • 1x Back

  • 1x Knob

  • 1x Ratchet Gear

  • 1x Ratchet

  • 1x Hub (No Supports)

  • 1x Hole Peg

  • 1x Skadis Hanger (Optional accessory.  Print on side with supports.  4+ walls)

Purchased:

  • 1x 608 Bearing.   (8x22x7)

  • CA Glue

Assembly:

  1. Place bearing into middle of ratchet gear.

  2. Apply CA glue to area around the bearing opening and line up the ratchet gear registration marks and sandwich them together.   Let dry or use activator to speed up the glue.

  3. Place peg into knob and feed through hole on the shell and press fit into the matching hole in the ratchet gear. This should all press fit tightly together without the need for glue.

  4. Install ratchet mechanism into the dovetail on the back shell above the gear.  Glue is optional it's a tight fit.

  5. Next line up the opening on the shell and the peg of the face into the bearing and ratchet assembly and sandwich together.   This should just press together.

  6. Fill with bits.

In the future I'd like to further refine my design so please leave feedback so I can take it into consideration for future versions.   Thanks for looking!
