Turn the crank and the three rings begin to rotate, creating the illusion that they are continuously passing through one another.
The motion is driven entirely by the hand-operated mechanical system. As the crank turns, the printed gear mechanism transfers the movement to the rings, producing a continuous and surprisingly hypnotic optical illusion.
The best part is controlling the effect yourself — turn it slowly to see how the geometry moves, or increase the speed and let the individual rings visually merge into one seemingly impossible motion.
The entire mechanism is 3D printable.
No bearings, screws, magnets, motors, electronics, or other hardware are required.
Included files
Individual STL files for all printable parts.
A ready-to-print 3MF project arranged on 3 build plates by color, matching the version shown in the photos.
The three-plate layout is only for convenient multi-color printing — all parts can easily be arranged on a single build plate and printed in one color.
Print it, assemble the mechanism, turn the crank — and let your eyes figure out how three solid rings can seemingly pass through each other.
No hidden electronics, no motor, no external hardware — the illusion comes entirely from printed geometry and mechanical movement.
