CORE 12

A compact desktop enclosure designed to repurpose the Framework Laptop 12 Mainboard as a standalone mini PC. The design keeps the native USB-C ports accessible while providing a simple, low-profile chassis for the board and its original cooling hardware.

Designed for the Framework Laptop 12 Mainboard

The concept was to create a desktop enclosure that could use the Mainboard independently of the laptop battery and expansion modules.

The enclosure was developed around Framework's Laptop 12 Mainboard CAD, using the existing board geometry, mounting locations, ports, and cooling hardware to establish the internal layout.

The small footprint makes it suitable for a desk, entertainment center, workbench, or anywhere a compact PC makes sense.

Direct USB-C Access

All four native USB-C ports are accessible through recessed openings in the sides of the chassis. This allows power and peripherals to connect directly to the Mainboard without the original expansion modules.

Cooling & Ventilation

Ventilation is incorporated into the top and bottom of the enclosure, with additional ventilation positioned alongside the Mainboard's cooling hardware.

The removable feet provide clearance beneath the chassis, allowing the bottom vents to remain open when the enclosure is placed on a flat surface.

Integrated Power Button

The power button is built into the top lid as a flexible printed lever that presses the existing power switch on the Mainboard. No additional switch or wiring is required.

Exploded Assembly

The enclosure consists of a bottom chassis, top lid, four lid locating pins, and four removable feet. The exploded view below shows the printed components, Mainboard, and mounting hardware.

Materials

Enclosure and locating pins - PETG

PETG is recommended over PLA because the Mainboard and cooling system generate heat during operation. PETG has better temperature resistance than PLA, reducing the risk of the enclosure softening or deforming after prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures.

Feet - TPU

TPU provides better grip on smooth surfaces and helps protect the surface beneath the enclosure from scratches.

Hardware

  • M3 × 4 mm screws ×2 — Mainboard

  • M3 × 4 mm screws ×4 — Feet

Assembly

  1. Attach the four feet to the bottom chassis using M3 × 4 mm screws.

  2. Position the Mainboard on the chassis locating points and secure it with two M3 × 4 mm screws.

  3. Install the four lid locating pins.

  4. Align the top lid with the chassis and press it into position.
