KEEP YOUR LIFE BALANCED.

Self-balancing birds may look like a clever trick, but they are actually a fascinating visual illusion based on carefully controlled mass distribution. I decided to take the idea one step further and use one of the unique capabilities of 3D printing: variable infill.

Instead of making the entire model heavy, selected areas use 100% infill, while the rest of the bird is printed at only 8% infill. This allows the mass to be concentrated exactly where it is needed to achieve balance.

I refined the mass distribution through several iterations, but every printer, filament and calibration can produce slightly different results. That is why I also designed an adjustment screw for the support/balance point, allowing the final balance to be fine-tuned after printing.

But I didn't want it to be just a balancing toy. I wanted it to live on my desk. So the balancing bird became part of a practical desk organizer. And, unexpectedly, gently moving and balancing the bird turned out to be a rather satisfying little desk fidget when I need to pause and refocus.

I’m a long-time admirer of Japandi design and Moku Flow aesthetics, so I wanted to bring some of those principles into this project as well: clean lines, organic curves, visual balance, simplicity, and functionality.

The organizer shown here was designed around my own desk needs, but the concept is intentionally adaptable — the bird and its support can inspire completely different organizer layouts.

It is not mandatory to print the desk organizer, you can support the bird on the rim of a glass, for example.

Recommended print settings

  • Material: PET-G recommended, at least for the adjustement screw

  • Main body: 8% infill

  • Modifier zones: 100% infill

  • Walls: 2

  • Top surface layers: 2

  • Bottom layers: 2

THE MODIFIER LIMIT IS THE EMBOSSED TIP OF THE BEAK.

Keep your desk organized. Keep your thoughts focused. Keep your life balanced.
