With Prusa’s NFC spool reading on the Core One, Prusa spools tell the printer what’s loaded. Everything else doesn’t. This adapter fixes that for third-party spools by putting an OpenPrintTag NFC sticker right where the reader expects it: around the spool’s centre hole.

It also does not matter which side you stick this on, the reader is strong enough to reach the opposite side!

How it works

  • Spool centre: Pushes into the hub of a Sunlu v3 spool and locks in place with ten flexible fingers that clip into the hub. It sits firmly and won’t walk out while the spool spins.

  • Tag face: The OpenPrintTag sticker goes on the flat flange of the adapter, flush against the spool’s side.

  • Centre stays open: The bore is kept clear, so the spool still fits on a standard spindle or spool holder.

  • Release tool: Ten fingers are hard to release by hand, so there’s a tool for it. Insert it into the adapter and twist. It pushes all ten fingers in at once, and the adapter slides out. That way you can move the tag to your next spool when this one runs empty.

Parametric Fusion file included
The design is fully parametric and currently set up for the Sunlu v3 spool. Open the Parameters dialog to adapt it to other spools or tag sizes.

If you adapt it to another brand’s spool, please post a make or a remix so others can use it too.

What you need

  • 1× OpenPrintTag NFC sticker.

  • A Sunlu v3 (3rd-gen) spool.

  • The printed adapter and release tool

Print settings

  • Material: [PETG / PLA] (PETG recommended for the fingers if you’ll reuse the adapter many times)

  • Layer height: [0.2 mm]

  • Perimeters: [3]

  • Infill: [15–20%]

  • Supports: [none]

  • Orientation: [flange down]

Installation

  1. Stick the OpenPrintTag on the adapter flange and program it with your filament data.

  2. Push the adapter into the spool hub until all fingers click in.

  3. Load the spool. The Core One reads the tag.

Removal
Insert the release tool, twist, and pull the adapter out.
