These are some counters for a basic strategy game I designed to speed up mass combat in a role playing game.

  1. You print these to fit onto a 1-inch battle map.
  2. Place a small nail into the groove of the bottom plate (one from each side for the 2x2 counter). Glue on the top plate using instant glue.
  3. Use a 3mm ball magnet as life indicator by placing it into the depressions.
  4. Print or draw some pictures for your units, cut them to 19mm height, 22mm width and insert them through the slit at the top of the counter.
  5. You may want to use an edding marker or such to carefuly paint the little heart and skull.

The rules of the game are up to you. I wanted to keep the game simple while still taking account of different unit types and of the way a unit is weakened. So here is how we played it:

  • Print or draw a number for attack strength and a number for defense on the unit picture. The numbers should be between 1 and 7 or so, depending on unit type.
  • Each unit can move between 1 and 3 tiles, depending on its type.
  • Then it can attack an adjacent unit, or one up to a few tiles away, if it is a ranged unit.
  • When attacking, each unit rolls as many dice as it has hitpoints left (ie. 5 max). Each “1” on the die is a hit and reduces the opponent's hitpoints by 1.
  • The type of die used depends on the difference (attack strength - defense):
    • +6 and more: always hits
    • +5: 1 to 5 on a d5
    • +4: 1 to 4 on a d6
    • +3: d2 (=1 to 3 on a d6)
    • +2: d3 (=1 or 2 on a d6)
    • +1: d4
    • 0: d6
    • -1: d8
    • -2: d10
    • -3: d12
    • -4: d20
    • -5 or less: never hits
  • If you need extra rules for flanking, swarming, running etc., just make them up! ;)

(Note: The photo is blurry by intent, because my son didn't check image copyrights for the units, sorry!)
