In our most recent move to save the planet the Mrs and I have turned to using shampoo and conditioner soap bars along with our regular soap. Obviously a solution was need to hold the multitude of bars where they didn't just melt away and create that sludgy mess.
3D printing to save the day!
I am aware that Soap dishes are not new but I struggled to find one that fit our specific requirements
- Big enough for 3 full bars of soap
- Fits within the corner of our bath
- Allows water to drain through it into the bath
In looking for inspiration and considering the limitations of 3D printing I designed this as the solution.
Drainage
Most other soap dish designs solve the drainage issue in one of two ways; hold the water until it is full enough to overflow or ad a slope to allow water to drain away. The issue is that we cant FDM print a slop what we get is steps so water isn't encouraged to flow out.
My solution was to print it flat then add wedged feet on the base after printing to create the slope needed to drain the water way smoothly.
Printing
Case - Simple enough to print I used a 0.6mm nozzle with 0.3mm layer height and printed it in a white PLA.
Rack - As above expect this is printed without Top or Bottom layers so the infill is exposed to create a mesh for the soap to sit on and drain through. I did increase the perimeters to give it some more strength
Wedge Feet - I printed these in TPU to add a bit of grip to the bath and stop it sliding around. Superglue in place
