This is an adapter that fits in US switch boxes in place of a switch or outlet to stabilize it for attaching a wall plate.
In my case I was replacing two switches to control a ceiling fan+light (2 gang box) with a tp-link kasa 240, which uses 1 gang. In my case the box was set back too far behind the drywall for any of the #6-32 screws I could find at the hardware store to fit. This adapter let me mount to the box, and then give something for the wall plate to screw into.
