There are a bazillion reusable spool designs out there, but I wanted something that is sturdy, does not use a lot of filament and is printable by smaller printers.

I designed this spool to avoid printing flanges so it uses cardboard cutouts as flanges (filament boxes are literally perfect for this). Ideally you cut out 4 flanges and glue them in pairs with corrugations running perpendicular to have 2 stiff flanges. The printed hub consists of 3 parts that thread together holding the flanges in place.

The result is a functional and sturdy spool that also can be stored much more compactly than typical “full body” reusable spools when not in use. Filament holes can also be easily added to the cardboard flanges.

This spool is compatible with Spectrum Filament refills, but I included the CAD files in STEP and Solidworks formats as well as the OnShape project URL if you want to adjust the dimensions to another format and/or spool brand.
