 *********

I'm just getting into the fish keeping with a planted aquarium hobby (since Jan 2026) and found a number of areas that would benefit from 3D printing.

I have a 20 gallon long aquarium that is heavily planted to help keep the water well oxygenated and clean.  And floating plants not only add to the decor, but also help keep the water clean.

However floating plants can get all over the place and may clog up your surface skimming filter.  I've tried designing a few rings and found the rectangular one the most useful.

**********

Key Features:

  1. Having straight sides, the ring attaches itself to the aquarium walls (and corners) very well using only water surface tension - no magnets needed.

  2. With multiple rings in place, they also attach to each other!

  3. Note: round rings do not behave like this - they tend to migrate around the tank, pushed by surface currents.

  4. Help separate different types of plants, if desired.

  5. Also available with a dedicated feeding window.

  6. Sized to fit aquariums 5 gal and up.

PM me if you are interested in other sizes!

Printing Recommendations (IMPORTANT):

  1. Use ABS or ASA only.  The other types of plastic is too dense to work well as a floating ring.

  2. Print at higher temperatures (250-260°C) for good layer adhesion and water tightness.

  3. Use 0.4mm diameter nozzle.

  4. 2 vertical perimeters.

  5. Important: 0% fill.

  6. 5 top layers, 4 bottom layers.

When printed properly, the ring should float a little more than halfway submerged.

Of course, you can print any way you want, but the above is what I've tested to get a good float.

Usage:

  1. Place with the extra wall facing up - this wall acts as an effective barrier against plants floating outside of the ring.

  2. Print some extras so you can swap them out when they need to be cleaned.

  3. Use my surface skimmer to help you transfer plants from one ring to another.
