Overview
This is an OpenSCAD version of Phoenix Knight Design's original 6 spool holder. The original design would not work for me due to my spools being significantly smaller than the ones in the original design.
Features
Using OpenSCAD's customizer you can generate files for your particular setup. The customizer will allow you to modify -
- Number of spools
- Connection type (MultiConnect / Multipoint)
- Spool height (side to side)
- Spool diameter
- Spool inner diameter
- Diameter for hole for wire
- Axle size
- Tolerance to allow for spool rotation
How to use
Assuming you need a model other than the sample I uploaded, you will need to download the 3 attached OpenSCAD files.
The file MultiConnect Slot.scad is pulled out of the code that is in the Git Repository for MultiConnect Multiboard projects. You will not need to edit it unless you need to change some of the items I made constants. This file controls the attributes of the slots on the back of the holder.
The file Multipoint.scad was written by me to create a multipoint backing if desired. You should also not need to edit this.
To create a custom model, make sure both all files are in the same directory and open the file Wire Spool Holder.scad in OpenSCAD. Use the customizer to generate the model you want. Render this model and then export. I recommend exporting as a .3mf file.
Open the file in your slicer of choice. Click on the model and choose “Split into objects”. This will result in 3 objects - the wire holder, the spool insert, and the extra axle to complete the spool. Tell your slicer to auto orient the objects for printing. If you want axles for all your spools, duplicate the 2 axle parts the appropriate number of times.
Notes
This is intended to have the wire wrap down the back of the holder and out of the hole. While I kept the original model's axle design, I've noted with the wire fed this way you may not need the axle, allowing you to print with tighter tolerances.
