My original Nikon D3500 lens cap broke (one of the plastic springs broke apart).

So I decided to remix the D3100 lens cap to one for the D3500 by scaling it up a bit. I installed it not with the printed springs but with actual springs recovered from a pen.

Assembly

  1. Print the models
  2. Get yourself a pen spring and some glue
  3. Cut the spring in half. You might even want to shorten each half a bit that it sticks out not to far. Check this image as to where I have let the spring come (just a mm or 2 before the extended border).
  4. Glue each pring more or less in the middel (note at this stage my springs are a bit too long, I ended up in disassembling it and cutting them shorter as explained above).
  5. Then snap in each side, and done ✅
