e-ink makes for the perfect high-contrast IoT displays. The model supports an Amazon 5x7 picture frame along with the e-ink display and microcontroller. This Amazon frame looks great (good enough that I am allowed to have it in the kitchen:). The model doesn't require any screws and secures the microcontroller and e-hat with 3d printed clips that are part of the model.
The model consists of a back mount that secures the e-ink display, microcontroller, and hat (if needed), and a matte frame border to center the e-ink display in the frame.
There are 3 versions of the back mount and 2 versions of the matte frame border, depending on the microcontroller you want to use and the e-ink display.
The following e-ink displays and microcontrollers are supported:
- e-ink display
- microcontroller
The Amazon frame can be found here:

I recommend using the ESP32 Display Driver board for the following reasons:
- It can directly drive the raw display without the need for the hat, which costs $16 standalone (Amazon) or an extra $15 when purchased with the display.
- As an ESP32, it is much faster than an ESP8266 and more future-proof.
- It doesn't require any soldering (this eliminates a lot of time and potential failures).
With respect to the display. The BW has a fast refresh of 6 seconds. The BWR and 7C take 30 seconds. For any application where you want to update frequently, ie, every few minutes, I think the BW is a much better choice. For refresh rates of 1 hour or greater, BWR is a suitable option if you want to add red. The 7 Color dsiplay is more a novelty IMHO. Colors are more washed out and lose the amazing crispness of the e-ink display.
The print can be done in PLA or PETG with standard settings and no supports. Ensure that you print one matte border and one frame, based on your display and microcontroller.
One modification needs to be made to the picture frame. Using a Philips screw driver, move one of the retention hooks over to the side so it doesn't interfere with the data cable. See the included picture. This takes less than 20 seconds.
