This is probably one of the most affordable 7.5" 800x480 e-paper weather display builds in 2025:

  • Lolin D32 ESP32 board: ~3$ on AliExpress

  • Waveshare E-Paper Driver HAT Rev2.3: ~7$ on AliExpress

  • 7.5inch RBW 800x480 e-Paper DEPG0750RWF86BF: ~24-26$ on AliExpress

  • Li-Pol battery (4000-5000 mAh) + PH connector + tape: ~10$

Before printing, ensure your printer is well calibrated. Tolerances are important for a good fit. I printed mine on an Ender 3 V3 SE using Creality Hyper PLA. Supports are not needed. Parts positioning can be found on the images.

I recommend printing screws in PETG with no cooling and at a high temperature for better layer adhesion. PLA should also work fine unless you plan to reassemble the enclosure frequently.

Frame sizes are specifically designed for a 0.2mm layer height.

For full assembly, you will also need:

  • PH 2.0 male/female connectors for the Li-Pol battery, as the native Lolin D32 PH2.0 battery connector is not accessible when assembled.

  • Double-sided tape for the Li-Pol battery.

  • A soldering iron and basic soldering skills.

Assembly instructions:

  1. Print the Front Frame, Inner Insert, Rear Lid, 4 long screws, and 6 short screws. The leg is optional.

  2. Solder the display connections and the PH2.0 female connector to the Lolin board.

  3. Insert the Lolin and Waveshare boards into their places. To fit the Waveshare HAT driver, gently bend the inner plate. Do not attempt to bend the latches — they are not designed to be bent and may crack if too much force is applied. After soldering the wires to the Lolin D32 board, slide the board into position starting from the left side, as shown in the picture below:

  4. Put display into the Front Frame.

  5. Insert the Inner Plate into the Front Frame.

  6. Put Rear Lid in place and tighten all 10 screws. Make sure nothing (like wires) is preventing the lid from resting on the supports. Structural supports from the inner plate (in red on the picture below) must rest against the outer rear lid:

  7.  Insert the leg if needed. For long-term use, it would be better gluing it in place with, for example, T-8000 glue.

As a weather display I'm using the fork of the imarzen/esp32-weather-epd project, adjusted specifically for these components - lumixen/esp32-weather-epd.
