Caster Adapters for Wheel Stand Pro

Overview

These adapters are meant to attach retractable casters to a Wheel Stand Pro.  The retractable casters allow the stand to be lowered onto the floor while in use to prevent it sliding around, and then quickly raised again to roll out of the way.  Also, the hard-rubber caster wheels are less likely to “react” with floor lacquer than the soft-rubber anti-slip rings on the stand (which the Wheel Stand Pro instructions warn about… search the document for “lacquer”).

Tips

• The casters are meant for large, heavy cabinets which wouldn't typically be lifted any higher than the “raised” position.  Lifting the Wheel Stand Pro higher allows the caster wheel to flip farther down.  It helps to add a “limit strap” (off-road/Jeep suspension term).  See the photo where this is done with a bit of yellow 1.18 mm “micro”-paracord.
• Print with a less brittle material like PETG
• Increase the shell/wall minimum-size/count, and use higher infill percentage in the slicer for additional strength. (Printing with default settings probably won't support enough weight.)

Printed Adapters

The first adapter type inserts into the end of the cross-tubes and grips the inside of the tube using an expansion wedge that is tightened with a 1/4-20 bolt through the center.  Rubber bands can be placed around the outside to improve the friction on the inside of the cross-tube.  The larger size, for the ~3" diameter tube on the far end of the stand, works better.

The second, end-clip adapter type slides over the junction of the lengthwise tube and cross tube on the near side of the Wheel Stand Pro.  It is retained using the head of the cap-screw, and a few nylon zip-ties.  This works better on the “small-tube” end.

The retractable casters for which these adapters were designed are sold on Amazon (and probably elsewhere) under various brand names. Search for “retractable casters,” and find the ~600lb option that matches the ones in the photos.  They come in sets of 4 for about $25-$35.  All of the ones I could find seem to be made from the same design and “should” have the same mounting screw pattern.  The specific Amazon product ID I used (for as long as the listing remains valid) is: B07MBYRX83 / Style: 600

Primary 4-Caster Setup

• Print 2x (one for each end) - large size “insert” adapter (with wedge disk) for the bigger cross-tube (near the pedals-end of the stand).
  • Requires a 1/4-20 x 3" bolt and nut for each.
• Print 2x (one for each side) - end-clip adapter
  • Requires 2 large nylon zip-ties for each.

Alternative for Rear “Small” Cross-Tube.

The insert type adapters do not work as well on the “small tubes" as the end-clip adapter type.  Unless the inserts are nearly glued in, and/or wedged very tightly with the center bolt, they tend to rotate or slip out.  However, the advantage of using these is that they might be less “in the way” (i.e. not right under your legs) than the end-clip type.  The STL files for both inside-diameters of the “small tube” end are included in a zip archive in case someone wants to try making that work (possibly by remixing and adding something to prevent them from rotating/slipping).

• The small inner size is for the silver “inner” tube size used for the Wheel Stand Pro frame.

  • Print only 1 of these for Wheel Stand Pro models that have another post attached to one side.
  • Requires a 1/4-20 x 2.5" bolt, nut and lock washer for each.
• The small outer size is for the painted “add-on” base-tube.
  • Print 1 of these for a Wheel Stand Pro that has a post attachment on the side.
  • Requires a 1/4-20 x 2.5" bolt, nut and lock washer (same as the other “small” size).
