This is a remix of the Polymaker Cardboard Spool Adapter with a larger inner ring to fit an OpenPrintTag.org NFC sticker. Additionally, an improved version that works better with Polymaker's new spool design is available. A trimmed down version with just the inner ring, in case you don't need a smooth rolling surface on the outer edge, is also included.

OpenPrintTag is an open-source initiative by Prusa Research creating a single smart spool standard that works across all brands and ecosystems.
Blank OpenPrintTag NFC tags can be purchased from the Prusa 3D Store. I assume further sourcing options will become available once the hardware spec is open-sourced.

Instructions

For assembly video and further information, please refer to the original model.

Printing

Print the parts in the default orientation. The STLs have been pre-rotated into the right orientation for printing. I used the 0.2mm Structural profile and increased the perimeter count to 3.

  • Material: If you plan on drying the spools, use a material that can withstand the temperatures inside the dryer. I used PETG and will see how it goes.
  • Layer height: 0.2mm
  • Extrusion width: 0.4mm or 0.45mm
  • Top / bottom solid infill: 4 or 5
  • Infill: 15%
  • Supports: no

Versions and Spool Compatibility

The original Polymaker Cardboard Spool Adapter works well for the older spool design used for PolyTerra, PolyLite, etc. When used with the newer spool design that was launched with the rebranding to Panchroma, or with Fiberon spools, the adapter covers some of the filament locking holes in the flange.
I've created additional variants that work with the new spool design.

Variant A

Flange hole cutouts unchanged. This variant is identical to Polymaker's original design.

Tested with PolyTerra PLA 1kg, PolyLite PLA 1kg.

Variant B

Flange hole cutouts have been adapted to fit the newer Polymaker spools.

Tested with Panchroma PLA 1kg, Fiberon ASA-CF 500g.

Inner Ring Only

Just the inner ring for when a smooth rolling surface on the outer edge is not needed. Significantly quicker to print, fit more on one bed.

Works with all Polymaker spools that I have.

Below are illustrations that show how the cutouts of the adapter align with the filament locking holes in the spool flanges. The spools were drawn based on measurements of the physical objects and 2D scans and may not be 100% accurate.

Remixing

STEP files are included for easy remixing. Additionally, the full Onshape CAD (it's a bit of a mess, sorry) is available here:
