History of Design
Many years ago, my wife received a small promotional item with a spool of thread and a needle hidden in the spool cavity. This little item proved useful many times, and she always kept it in her emergency kit.
Until one day she discovered that it had broken somewhere.
She searched for it for a long time, but couldn't find it anywhere, not even at second-hand shops or among promotional items.
So I brought this little gadget back to life with the help of my printer and a little CAD data.
Design Description
This set contains everything you need for simple clothing repairs, including needles, coloured yarns, and, of course, a handy case to save everything in your fashion purse, emergency bag or outdoor backpack.
The set includes a hollow lipstick-shaped case with insert with five spools for thin sewing yarns and storage space for couple of sharp needles.
The yarn can be secured against unwinding in the narrow gaps between the individual spools.
Just a heads up: this design is best for thin yarns and needles, so please don’t use it for repair darning yarn or thick wool! The thinner yarns can be easily wound and secured, but thicker yarns would require resizing the components for a proper fit.
3D Print
The hollow lipstick-shaped case consists of two threaded parts:
a body with a cylindrical cavity (LIPSTICK.1),
a cap with a cylindrical cavity (LIPSTICK.2).
The 3D model is available in two versions – the version with grooves that facilitate screwing and easy hide the layer connections during 3D printing. The second version is smooth, without grooves, but with outside visible print seams.
Note:
These parts can also be found in market e-shops as a professionally produced luxury needle box made of yellow metal and polished wood (see pictures). If the dimensions of the cavity in the part from the e-shop are sufficient (i.e., diameter of 12 mm and cavity length of at least 70 mm), it can replace a 3D-printed case.
The insert consists of these parts:
one threaded spool (INSERT.1),
one closed spool (INSERT.2),
three standard spools (INSERT.3),
one threaded cap (INSERT.CAP).
You can print all at once or gradually, depending on your printer configuration, for example, using metallic-colored filament, which gives the product an attractive appearance.
Note:
I recommend using PETG filament due to the higher resistance of the threads and snap-fit connections on stressed parts.
For print was used slightly modified default setup CoreOne in original Prusa Slicer:
Print setup "Prusa CoreOne - nozzle 0,4 mm - 0,15mm balanced"
Filamet Generic PETG, hotend temperature 240°C, printbed heating 85°C
Infill 50%
Brim 5 mm (to stabilize small parts on printbed)
Supports on printbed only (to avoid instable small contacts on printbed)
3D models and print results see on pictures in attachment.
