Be aware that this may leave subtle marks or scratches your controller. Also, while this seems pretty sturdy so far, there are stress concentrations on the mechanism that could potentially cause a break. Use at your own risk.

A controller mount, built around my angle-adjusting mechanism:

Edit 1: Added a fixed-angle alternative to the gear-spring mechanism

Edit 2: Added a controller clip for the 8bitdo Lite 2 controller, in the STEP files folder

Tested with:

  • Xbox controller

    • not an Xbox One controller! I think it should work on those as well, but I don't have one. Might be a tighter fit.

  • 8bitdo Ultimate

  • 8bitdo Lite 2

    • this file is provided separately in the STEP files folder

    • make sure you delete the standard XBox / Pro controller clip in the 3MF if you don't need it

If you try it with other controllers, please let me know if it works and how tight it is.

Printing

You can just use the 3MF, which has some settings and minimal brim helper disks

  • Only print with rigid and low-shrinkage materials like PLA, or it may feel floppy and loose -- the design may be tweaked later to increase printability

  • Perimeters should be at least 5 for the angle adjusting mechanism, as it's small and experiences a lot of stress concentration

  • Due to complexity of the gear/spring mechanism, you may want to avoid speedy printing modes / large layer height

  • Nozzle sizes above 0.4mm may not work, because of the fine detail in the angle adjusting mechanism

  • Higher perimeters on the controller clip is likely a good idea too

Assembly

  • You may want to attach the controller clip to your controller first, to avoid breaking the other parts when assembling (the clip may be tight on some controllers).

  • Insert the spring tensioning plate as shown in the image

  • Slide all the dovetail joints together, and slide the phone holder parts together

  • Use 1 or 2 strong elastic bands around the hooks on the back of the phone holder assembly

To change the angle, pinch the side plates to release the lock, adjust while pinching, and release.

Step files and the (somewhat messy) FreeCAD file is provided.
