Why I Made This
While preparing for my own PV installation, I couldn't find a similar tool that would make positioning solar panels easier when working alone. So I decided to design and 3D print my own solution.
The dimensions of this project were designed specifically for my setup, using JA Solar panels and Corab 30 × 50 mm mounting rails.
Please keep in mind that the dimensions may not be suitable for other panel or mounting rail systems. Always check the dimensions and compatibility with your own installation before use.
How It Works
The set consists of 4 sliders that are placed on the PV mounting rails before positioning the solar panel. The panel can then be placed on top of the sliders and easily moved left and right along the rails.
This makes it much easier to position the panel, align it with neighboring panels and connect everything without repeatedly lifting the panel.
Securing the Panel on a Sloped Roof
Each slider features a hole for a securing screw.
For installation on a sloped roof, I used securing screws in the two upper sliders. The screws are positioned so that they fit into the panel's mounting holes. This prevents the panel from sliding downhill while it is being positioned.
Smooth Movement
For even smoother movement, I recommend adding a layer of felt to the bottom of the sliders.
In my setup, the panel could be moved along the mounting rails with practically minimal force — it moved very smoothly and made positioning the panel significantly easier.
The securing screws are intended only to prevent unwanted panel movement during installation. Once the panel is in its final position, remove the sliders and install the panel according to the manufacturer's mounting instructions.
Important
This is an installation aid, not a permanent mounting component. Always make sure the panel is safely secured before removing the sliders, and verify that the dimensions and geometry are compatible with your particular PV panels and mounting rails.
