This project lets you add Apple Touch ID to your Logitech MX Keys S by reusing the original electronics and Touch ID sensor from a compact Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID.

The Apple keyboard is disassembled and its internal electronics are transferred into a custom 3D printed enclosure designed to sit underneath the Logitech MX Keys S. This gives you the convenience of Touch ID while keeping the keyboard you actually want to use.

Compatibility

Logitech keyboard:

✔ Logitech MX Keys S – full-size version

Apple donor keyboard:

✔ Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID – compact version without Numeric Keypad
✔ Lightning version

❌ Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad is NOT compatible. Its internal mainboard is longer and does not fit inside this enclosure.

Support for the compact USB-C version is currently in preparation.

The original Apple electronics, original battery and Touch ID sensor are reused.

Important: Touch ID requires a compatible Apple silicon Mac.

Before you disassemble the Apple keyboard I strongly recommend pairing the Magic Keyboard with your Mac before disassembling it.

Pairing can also be done afterwards, but doing it while the keyboard is still complete makes the whole process much easier.

Apple Magic Keyboard disassembly

The Apple keyboard has to be carefully disassembled to remove the Touch ID sensor, electronics, battery and other required components.

Please watch the complete disassembly guide before starting.

Important: This modification requires extensive disassembly of the Apple Magic Keyboard. Do not start unless you are comfortable with permanently modifying the donor keyboard.

Hardware needed

  • 1× Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID – compact version without Numeric Keypad, Lightning version

  • 1× Logitech MX Keys S

  • 4× M2×4 screws (holding housing cover)

  • 2× M2×3 screws (holding touch ID holder)

  • 2x M1,6x3 screws (holding PCB)

  • 4× short M2 heat-set inserts (e.g. CNC Kitchen)

  • 2x short M1.6 heat-set inserts (e.g. CNC Kitchen)

  • Double-sided adhesive tape

  • Kapton tape – optional

You will also need the original Apple keyboard electronics, original battery, Touch ID sensor and internal components removed during disassembly.

Assembly

The enclosure consists of four printed parts:

  • Main Housing

  • Bottom Cover

  • Touch ID Holder

  • Lightning Connector Holder

The Apple electronics and original battery are installed inside the Main Housing, with the Touch ID sensor positioned for easy access underneath the Logitech MX Keys S.

Double-sided adhesive tape is used to attach to MX Keys. Kapton tape can optionally be used for additional electrical insulation and cable management.

Installing the battery

To insert the original Apple battery into the Main Housing, the housing needs to be gently and carefully flexed.

Do this only as much as necessary to slide the battery into position. Avoid excessive bending to prevent damaging or cracking the print.

Battery life and charging

Because of the way the original Apple keyboard electronics are reused, the unit can no longer be switched off after the conversion. In my testing, the original battery lasts approximately 40 days on a single charge. The original Lightning charging connector remains accessible, so the unit can simply be recharged when needed.

It is also possible to use the Touch ID module permanently connected to power without relying on the battery, but I do not recommend this configuration for normal use.

Print settings

  • Material: PLA recommended (In photos used: Prusament Woodfill Charcoal Black)

  • Nozzle: 0.4 mm

  • Layer height: 0.2 mm

  • Perimeters/walls: 3

  • Infill: 15–20%

  • Supports: Required for main housing

  • Brim: Not required under normal conditions

Notes

This project does not modify or emulate Touch ID itself. It uses the original Apple Touch ID sensor and its original paired electronics.

The Logitech MX Keys S is not electronically modified – the printed enclosure simply integrates the Apple hardware underneath it.
