This is quick to print and easy-to-play toy!

How to play: try to throw it away holding the biggest blob on the print (that's where the maple seed should be) and throw it away from yourself and in a couple of minutes you would be rocking in this!

This toy is based on maple seed which is also referred to as (Based on the MSU team post):

More commonly referred to as “helicopters,” “whirlers,” “twisters” or “whirligigs,” samaras are the winged seeds produced by maple trees.

Print recommendations

  1. Print scale 100%:
    1. Infill 0%
    2. 2 permiters
  2. print scale 200%:
    1. infill 10%
    2. 2 permiters

I've tried a couple of options and even if the first throw of the print fails - it might start to spin nicely in a couple of tries ;)

Example of usage

A longer space and not holding the camera would be useful but here are examples:

Motivation

At International Phisics Turnamet held in 2019, I helped the Polish team from the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw. One of the questions to solve was titled “4. Escaping helicopters” in which students had to investigate the spinning motion of falling seeds of certain species (such as maple trees). You can see below my first attempt at reconstructing maple seed with PETG, tape, paper as a sail, and clay:

Only the 3d printed (green) frame shown below is too light

So I've added some clay to weigh down to mimic relatively to the whole model heavy seed which gave a nice distribution of mas.

The model given in this post is a remix of my model shown above.

Safety

I have never seen that this toy did some harm, but as this toy is meant for throwing - You are responsible if some harm will be done with your print of it.

My cousins played with it in the salon and there was some running so Kids playing with it might tiny excited.
