Reused design ideas:
- based on platonic solid
- two basic parts design (surface element, edge connection element)
- patterned center cut out
- curved connection to edge connector
Alterations:
- based on dodecahedron instead of icosahedron
(the enclosed circle in a pentagon is closer in size to the enclosing circle, therefor the central pattern appears bigger in relation to the dodecahedron as it would in a icosahedron) - the pentagon base form of the surface parts lends itself for a five pointed star pattern
- the connection angle is 90° (between surface-center-to-connection-line and the connecting peace of the surface part), which minimizes the connectors thickness
- highlight patterns (on connectors and pentaplane2 for two-color prints through filament change at layer)
- enclosing sphere diameter 73mm (without hook)
Visible in the photos are three variants of given design:
- Pure white
(printed in PLA Vanilla White) - White with dark highlight
(pentaplane1 in PLA Vanilla White, connectors with 1st layer PLA Galaxy Black and others in PLA Vanilla White) - Black with white highlights
(pentaplane2 with 1st layer PLA Galaxy Black and others in PLA Vanilla White, connectors with 1st layer PLA Galaxy Black, body PLA Vanilla White and topped of with PLA Galaxy Black)
Warning: Tight tolerances!
The clearance between surface connection part and connector hole is 0.1mm (hole is 0.1mm bigger). It's designed for close but still loose fit. The surface connection part is chamfered so a friction fit might still be possible on printer with less tight tolerances. The freecad model file is parameterized. Adjust parameter “part clearance” if necessary.
With a 0.4mm nozzle I printed the the surface parts with 0.1mm and connector peaces with variable layer height (though larger layer height should be ok).
To make one you need:
- 12 surface peaces (pentaplane1 or pentaplane2 or mixed to your taste)
- 19 edge connectors (connector; +1 if you don't need a hook peace)
- 1 edge connector with hook (connectorhook)
- glue for permanence
To assemble the dodecahedron, I started with the hook connection peace and with a tiny drop of glue fixed the first surface part. Every following surface part now needs to rotated into the final position. The connecting parts of the surface peaces should look like two hooks grabbing each other (yes, I probably should have named the connector for hanging the dodecahedron “connectoreye” to avoid naming confusion at this point, but I'm too lazy to change it now). After the first three surface parts are attached it should look like this:
After adding three edge connectors:
After three more surface parts:
After six edge connectors:
After three more surface parts:
After six more edge connectors:
At this point the last three surface parts, followed by the last four edge connectors can be added to finish the build. These last steps can get finicky as parts of the semi finished dodecahedron can interfere with the placement of the last parts. However the thin connection part are quiet flexible, so lightly flexing them out of the way should do the trick. Though people with thin fingers and good hand-eye coordination will have it easier at this point.
