This is a DIY Apple Touch ID for Logitech MX Keyboards. Overall it is quite simple.

All you need:

You can use your printer's heatbed to loosen the adhesive back on the keyboard, then disassemble the inners. This really only takes 10 - 15min and there are lots of guides online.

Then you should verify that the keyboard (touch id sensor) works outside of the keyboard enclosure.

Finally, you can assemble the button. There are 3 pieces, the case, cover, and button brace. The base and cover are press fit so I recommend printing them at the same time in the same orientation on your print bed. This way if you have any x/y skew during the print, they should still fit together. The base does need supports for the lightning connector mounts. I printed the models in a matte black PLA with 15% infill and input shaping w/ supports everywhere.

Assembly:

  1. Mount the button to the lid with the brace and 3mm screws. Adjust the screws so that the button clicks nicely.
  2. Slide the lightning connector onto the posts in the base. Then using a soldering iron or something similar, melt the ends of the post so it cannot slide back off.
  3. Ensure all the cables are connected and test again that it works
  4. Snap the lid on
  5. Slide the button under your keyboard to your desired location. Keep in place using double sided tape.

Note: I added a hole on the bottom of the case, this is so you can pop the lid back off if need be.

Revision - 12/26/24 - Made the slot for the lightning cable larger to accomadate more chargers
