Self-Assembly

Self-Assembly is the emergent property of order arising from disorder.

I first found out about Self-Assembly from Steve Mould's video found here:

Inspiration and motivation

There a few models out there besides this one that also are meant to demonstrate Self-Assembly, but I found that they either required specific magnets or were hard to print using FDM printers (needed supports etc…). I decided to make a model from scratch that had FDM 3d printing in mind from the start. Models I took inspiration from: https://www.printables.com/model/334972-self-assembling-virus-dodecahedron, https://www.printables.com/model/460385-virus-in-the-third-dimension-the-art-of-self-assem. The idea behind this model is that it would be easy, fast and cheap to print, and wouldn't require glue, yet still manages to self-assemble.

Parameters of the parametric fusion360 model:

NamePurposeDefault
pentagon_diameterDiameter of circle from which pentagonal prism is inscribed.16mm
pentagon_heightThe resulting height of the pentagonal prism. Each side of the dodecahedron will have this depth. 6mm
magnet_heightThe height of your preferred magnet.2mm
magnet_widthThe width of your preferred magnet.3mm

To change parameters:

  1. open the .f3d file in fusion360
  2. under solid toolset, click “modify” dropdown
  3. click “Change Parameters”

Suggested Printer Settings for a ~10min print per piece

Nozzle: 0.4mm

Layer Height: 0.16mm

Perimeters: 3

Top Solid Layers: 5

Bottom Solid Layers: 3

Infill: 5%

No Supports

Required Parts

120 3x2 neodymium magnets (The ones I used and are the ones set for the default parameters) I got them from amazon here:
