🔹 Description

This is version 2 of my self-watering planter, designed to make plant care more reliable while improving on the original design. Like v1, it uses bottom-up watering: water is stored in an outer reservoir and slowly fed into the soil from below, encouraging deeper root growth and reducing overwatering.

The key upgrade in this version is the integrated refill hatch, which keeps the reservoir mostly sealed. This minimizes evaporation so the only meaningful way water leaves the system is through the plant itself, not into the air. That means longer intervals between refills and more consistent moisture over time.

The two-part design separates soil and water, allowing roots to draw only what they need. You fill the reservoir, close the hatch, and let the planter handle the rest. It’s ideal for houseplants, herbs, and decorative plants—especially if you travel, forget to water, or want more predictable results.

Fully 3D printable and designed to look good on display, this planter is functional, simple, and built for everyday use.

🔹 How It Works

This planter uses a bottom-watering reservoir system to regulate soil moisture naturally. Water is added to the outer shell through the top hatch and stored below the soil line. From there, moisture moves upward into the soil through the inner pot, where roots can absorb it as needed.

The sealed hatch significantly reduces evaporation, keeping water in the system longer. Because the soil isn’t soaked from above, roots grow downward toward the water source instead of staying shallow. This helps prevent overwatering, reduces the risk of root rot, and keeps the soil surface drier and cleaner.

The result is healthier plants and fewer watering cycles.

🔹 Print Settings & Recommendations

Layer height: 0.2–0.28 mm
Infill: 10–20% (gyroid or cubic recommended)
Perimeters: 3–4 walls for better water resistance
Supports: Not required

Material:

  • PLA works well for indoor use

  • PETG recommended for improved water resistance

  • ASA suitable for higher heat or sun exposure

For best results, prioritize good layer adhesion. Slightly increasing extrusion temperature can improve watertightness. If absolute leak prevention is needed, a thin epoxy or food-safe sealant can be applied to the reservoir interior.
