Connectors help you get the perfect alignment on Fiberon deck access hatches. I'm a stickler for consistent gaps, and the traditional hatch construction wasn't cutting it for me.

The hatch must span across 2 joists for support. This print is not in any way supporting weight, it's only for connecting the hatch planks together.

Print in PETG with at least 5 walls.

After i got the hatch in place with all the connector pieces, i put This kept everything nicely in place while i flipped over the hatch and

Trying this on a test piece first is recommended.

  1. After cutting the hatch planks, connect all the hatch planks together with connector pieces. You can trim the connectors that intersect hatch holes.

  2. Test fit the hatch in place on the deck. Be sure no connectors rest on joists.

  3. Tweak the spacing until it's beautiful and perfect.

  4. Add a drop of 2p10 glue into the connectors that were visible between the plank gaps. You can mask the decking with blue painters tape if you're feeling fancy. The 2P10 glue I used turned white and I had to add a drop of stain to darken it up. Other cyanoacrylate glue (crazy glue) brands might work better. If you find a winner, please let me know.

  5. Wait for glue to set. Using kicker/accelerant is not recommended as it can discolor composite decking.

  6. Flip the hatch over being careful not to disloge any glued joints.

  7. Add screws that won't penetrate the face of the decking. I used #8 x 9/16 in self-piercing lathe screws. If you're not accessing the hatch much, you can probably skip the screws.
