Give your Framework Laptop 12 motherboard a classic 90s makeover! This 3D printable enclosure transforms your Framework 12 mainboard and battery into a fully functional standalone desktop computer inspired by the iconic beige desktop PCs of the 486 CPU era.

🔄 UPDATE V2 - Changelog & Improvements

I've updated the design based on early feedback and testing to make it even more functional and easy to use! Here is what’s new in V2:

  • Top Power Button: Added a dedicated mechanical button on the top cover for easier power-on access.

  • Wider Base & USB-C Expansion Slots: Enlarged the base to integrate dedicated housings for Framework USB-C expansion modules.

  • Audio Port Cutout: Added a precise cutout for direct access to the audio jack compartment.

  • Enhanced Airflow (Intake & Feet): Redesigned the bottom with a custom intake grille and 4 raised feet to elevate the case and maximize cooling fan performance.

  • M2 Screw Mounting: Standardized all internal standoffs and lid screw holes for M2 hardware.

🔄 NEW OPTIONAL MOD V3: Floppy Bay USB-C Expansion Slot!

I’ve added an alternative front panel / case cover option for those who want even more functionality!

Model name: FW12 3 Bottom V3 - Front module slot

  • Functional Floppy Drive Slot: The decorative mini floppy drive slot can now accommodate an official Framework USB-C Expansion Card.

  • Internal Extension Cable: Using a short internal USB-C extension cable routed to the mainboard, you can turn the retro floppy slot into an easily accessible, fully working front port!

  • Modular Choice: You can choose between the original decorative retro look or this functional extension mod depending on your needs. Both files are included in the model downloads!

🌟 Key Features

  • Nostalgic 90s Aesthetics: Features period-accurate details like a decorative mini floppy disk slot and a vintage front power button (kept purely aesthetic to preserve the classic layout).

  • Easy Access Power Switch: Side slot allows effortless access to the real Framework power module.

  • Integrated Battery Housing: Internal bay designed specifically to secure the official Framework 12 battery.

  • Full I/O Access: All 4 USB-C ports remain completely accessible for expansion cards, displays, and peripherals.

  • Optimized Airflow: Custom intake vents on the bottom and exhaust grilles aligned with the stock Framework cooling fan prevent heat buildup.

  • Durable Enclosure: Secure top lid fastened with self-tapping screws for easy internal maintenance.

⚙ Assembly & Hardware Required

  • Lid Screws: 4x self-tapping screws (M3 x 8mm or M3 x 10mm recommended for plastics).

  • Mainboard Mounting: Uses the 4 official captive M3 mounting points provided on the Framework board.

  • Assembly Order:

    1. Seat the battery in the bottom internal bay.

    2. Secure the motherboard onto the integrated standoffs using the M3 captive screws.

    3. Align and screw down the top cover using the self-tapping screws.
