I wanted to learn more about the ESP32 and also use it as a transmitter for robots / buggies.

Thus, the ESParto was born!

Whilst the Esparto may be a little retro-inspired, it features:

  • An ESP32 microprocessor “devkit” board to function as the brain of the device.
  • Inbuilt WiFi and Bluetooth for controlling devices.
  • An OLED screen - helpful for status indication and debugging, whilst also not drawing excessive amounts of power.
  • Rechargeable battery.
  • Two joysticks with inbuilt buttons.
  • Three buttons to assign to functions.
  • A switched, external-facing USB to power extra/extended devices.
  • Easy access to the buttons on the ESP32.
  • Easy access to the ESP32 serial port for programming.
  • A 10mm grid of 3mm holes to bolt in additional future modules :).

A fun little project!

Printed on my Bambu Labs X1 to get a nice bit of colour onto it.  0.2mm layer height throughout.  Can print on anything :).

BOM:

  • 1x ESP32-WROOM-32D development board (AliExpress link)
  • 1x 0.91" I2C OLED screen (AliExpress link)
  • 1x Battery charger board with 3.3v output to fit 18650 cell (AliExpress link)
  • 2x Dual-axis joystick module (AliExpress link)
  • 1x Mini rocker switch (AliExpress link)
  • 3x Mini momentary push button switch (Amazon link)
  • Various 2.5mm standoffs.  Recommend:
    • 6x 8mm nylons for buttons mount (or 6mm with an additional 2mm nut)
    • 4x 6mm nylons for battery module.
    • Just use a 3mm nut as a spacer for joysticks.
  • Various M3 screws.  I just used M3x10 throughout.

Updates:

05-Dec-2022:

  • Better mount for OLED screen, holding it firmly in place.
  • “Sockets” for the screw shafts to slide into when fitting the lid.  Without these, the wires were hard to shuffle out from under the screw fixings.
