Inspired by https://www.printables.com/model/1388014-parametric-freecad-lens-cap-generator.

To create your own lens cap open the attached FreeCAD file and set parameters (dimensions):

  • Diameter_thread: diameter of the filter thread (tested minimum is 46 mm)
  • Height_thread: height of the  filter thread (default is 3 mm)
  • Tolerance: how many mm is the diameter of the inner cylinder smaller than the diameter of the filter thread. (Default value is 0.5 mm)
  • Spring_thickness_ratio: default is 0.05, which means that the spring thickness is 1/20 of the filter thread diameter
  • Label_on_top: the top label text (default is “Lens Cap”)
  • Top_label_font_size_ratio: the top label text font scale (default is 0.1, which means that the font height is 1/10 of the filter thread diameter).
For longer text, reduce the height (and also width) setting scale to less than 0.1
You can also experiment with different scales.

To change the font of the TopLabel, edit the font property of the Body-TopLabel-ShapeString001 object:

Font of the cap diameter label can be changed the same way, but must change property of Body-InnerLabel-ShapeString002 object.

Recommended printer settings:
Material: ASA (or PETG?)
Nozzle: 0.4 mm
Layer height: 0.1 mm (smaller is better)
Perimeters: 4 (3 for the Spring)
Supports: not needed
Brim: recommended for lock and small diameter spring

STLs for some common diameters are attached.
Each XXmm-Lock.stl print twice.
