Overview

A faceted Art Deco–inspired lantern shade designed by hakkaisha. It works as a striking geometric pendant on its own or as a display piece you can dress with faux flowers, vines, or seasonal decor. Thin walls let light glow through for a soft, prismatic effect.

Design Intent

  • An Art Deco and prism/diamond-inspired lantern that can be used plain or embellished by hanging decorations.
  • Intended for LED string lights or other low-heat lighting.
  • Thinner walls increase brightness and diffusion.
  • No supports required for printing.
  • Target users: makers who want a stylish, customizable lantern for home ambiance or events.
  • Environment: indoor use.
  • Constraints and trade-offs: strength vs. translucency; thinner walls diffuse better but are more delicate.

Features

  • Faceted “diamond” geometry with crisp planes for a Deco look.
  • Vertical light windows and lower prism panels create multi-direction glow.
  • Top hang point for cord, hook, or cable tie.
  • Open interior to weave LED fairy lights and tuck decorations.
  • Prints upright with no supports on typical FDM printers.
  • Works well in white or translucent filaments for soft diffusion.
  • Decoration-friendly gaps to route stems, vines, or string lights.
  • Lightweight single-piece shade for easy hanging.

Printing Recommendations

  • Material: PLA or other low-warp, translucent/light-colored filament.
  • Orientation: print upright as shown in photos/CAD.
  • Supports: not needed.
  • Walls: use thinner walls for more brightness (e.g., 1–2 perimeters with a 0.4 mm nozzle). Increase walls if you prefer a sturdier, less translucent look.
  • Infill: low (0–10%) or use modifier to keep walls consistent; aim for smooth external faces.
  • Layer height: 0.2 mm is a good balance for time and detail.
  • Dimensions: Author to fill.

Assembly

  • Hardware (optional):
    • LED fairy light string or other low-heat LED source
    • Small cord, zip tie, or hook for hanging
    • Faux flowers or vines if decorating
  • Steps:
    1. Clean up the print if needed.
    2. Thread a hanging cord/zip tie through the top eyelet or center opening and secure.
    3. Feed LED string lights inside; distribute to taste. Route the wire through the top opening (or side passthrough if present).
    4. Add decorations by weaving stems through the vertical slots and lower facets.
    5. Test-hang and adjust light placement for even glow.

Safety & Usage Notes

  • Use LED lighting only; do not use incandescent or high-heat bulbs. 3D-printed plastics can soften above 50–60°C.
  • Keep away from open flames, high heat sources, and prolonged direct sunlight.
  • This is a decorative shade; not a structural load-bearing part.
  • Small parts and decorations can be a choking hazard—keep out of reach of young children.
  • Inspect cords and connections for wear; secure the lantern so it cannot fall.
