7" Speed Square with bottom corner removed

  • Took a Swanson 7" speed square and made a "replica" in Tinker Cad and then removed (.75in) (3/4") from the bottom corner.

  • Removed corner to allow clearance for welds, small trim, wiring, or anything that might be in the way when using a speed square.

  • This design allows the square to not interfere with those objects, therefore accurately telling you if something is square without the guess work when you can't get your square flush up against an object.

My Experience with this item

I have printed several of these but needed a couple more so decided to post this design on here and maybe help someone else out.

  • Use these all the time when fabricating in the garage or woodworking ( I use them more for metal fab work that anything)

  • Also use them when building pipe fence ( Printed them in Orange so they are easy to see when dropped on the ground)

  • They do well as long as you don't hold them against a piece of metal superheated from welding for more than a couple seconds.

  • Sure I have broken one or two of the 10 I have printed due to lack of paying attention but they have held up very well in my experience with them.

  • Found that they are very cheap to make and great to be able to throw one in this truck, one in that truck, one in the house, one in the garage, ect.

How they are made

  • I have printed 90% of these out of orange PETG and that has worked well for me

  • Used PLA on some of the very first ones I printed and PLA works fine as well but found over time being out in the heat and sun building pipe fence they start to deteriorate.

  • Printed these with a 50% infill to give them added rigidity and that has worked very well for what I do with them.

  • Used the "Gyroid" infill as it is one of the strongest infill options out there

  • Also slowed outer layer speed down to 170mm/s for a smoother appearance on the outer layers.  (This works for me on my printers, may not be the best option for you).

Printing on your printer - what you need to know

  • This print needs very minimal support; the "long tube" portion at the bottom does need support. (Circled in the pictures I uploaded)

  • The rest of the object does not need support, If your slicer wants to add support set the "Threshold angle" to 5 degrees and it will get rid of all supports that you don't need

  • In other words enable supports, set "Threshold angle" to 5 degree and only supports left on the model are the ones you need.
