I heard good things about the original (The Filter), but I didn't have a way to mount it on my Trident. I figured having removable fans would be more convenient than a fixed mount, so I designed some magnet frames that mount under the frame and added magnet holes to the original single fan housings.

Required Parts:

Print the parts with no supports in ABS. I printed at fairly low speeds to avoid warping (20mm/s first layer, 80mm/s max for remaining layers).

To assemble, start by pressing the magnets into the holes on the Mag Mounts and the Housing parts.

  • MAKE SURE you check polarity before putting them in; they're hard to pry out. My method was to stack my magnets up and put them in one by one into the Mag Mounts, then stick one magnet on top of each installed magnet and press those into the Housing one by one. If you get one stuck in backwards (don't ask how I know), you can use a small flathead to dig underneath the top edge and pop it out.

Fill the tray on both Housing parts with as much carbon as you can. I found it easiest to put the lid on halfway and fill it through the hole and shake it to even them out before sliding the lid on all the way.

Pop two t-nuts into either side of the center bed support extrusion, and two more on the inside slot of the horizontal extrusion.

The next step is up to you. If you'd like your fans pointing towards the back of the printer, install the long side of the Mag Mounts on the center extrusion (I prefer this setup because it blows the “clean” air towards my outlet fan in the back). If you want your fans pointing to the sides of the printer, install the short side of the Mag Mounts on the center extrusion. Use the M3x8 screws to install the mounts.

Route the wires for the fans so they come out through the vent side, and ferrule crimp the ends. Ferrule crimp one end of the extra red and black wire, and install the JST connector on the other end. Using the 3-way WAGOs, plug all 3 red wires into one and all 3 black wires into the other.

  • NOTE: The original creators of The Filter highly recommend using a spare hotend port to plug in the bed fans to avoid the risks of shorting out the fan ports. I personally wired mine into a fan port and have not run into any issues yet (since I'm not using the pogo connectors they used). Please refer to the original github for their install instructions, don't take my word for it.

Use Ellis' bed fans macro for this, and make sure to insert the pin you used, otherwise it will throw an error.

Let me know how this works for you! If you have any questions, leave me a comment or PM me. Be sure to visit the original creators for any technical details, as they have great documentation. Thanks to them for creating this mod too!
