This is still a work in progress!
XS Version not tested.
Sidewinder X1 to Hemera Revo or Hemera Revo XS upgrade.
Adapters and brackets that are necessary to upgrade Sidewinder X1 to the Hemera Revo extrusion system and support for BLTouch.
I am no CAD designer, but I couldn't find any good mounts on the web, so I made my own and am providing the files to you. The models are not perfect and if anyone has any ideas please share them.
Don't forget to print all the adapters and brackets and get all the hardware before starting the upgrade.
Required hardware:
- Extruder adapter
- Ribbon board adapter (choose one that fits your needs).
- 6x 16 mm M3 screw
- 6x 8 mm M3 screw
- 4x M3 nut
- Other hardware for fan mount of choice
How to mount extruder:
- Mount the chosen ribbon cable board to the extruder using 2x 8 mm M3 screw.
- Mount the board to the adapter using 2x 8 mm M3 screw and 2x M3 nut.
- Mount the BLTouch to the extruder adapter using 2x 8 mm M3 screw and 2x M3 nut.
- Mount the extruder to the extruder mounting plate using 4x 16 mm M3 screw.
- Connect all cables (some modifications required).
- Mount the extruder assembly to the printer using the top 2x 16 mm M3 screw and at the bottom reuse the nut that is holding one of the wheels. When you screw on the nut make sure you adjust the roller wheel tightness.
- Connect the ribbon cable.
- Firmware upgrade.
- Print away.
Cabling:
Because of the gearing of the Hemera, the extrusion is reversed. To fix this you have to switch the middle two cables of the extruder motor extension.
Waggster mod for BLTouch.
Some soldering is required to change the connector on the board or heater core. I changed mine on the board to improve future compatibility. I used the extension cable to source the connector.
The extruder fan cable has to be shortened and the connector has to be changed.
The model cooling fan cable may need to be lengthened.
BLTouch:
Sidewinder does not support BLTouch from the factory nor is it wired to be. So you have to do a waggster mod that converts the original LED wiring to be used with a BLTouch.
There are other ways to wire the BLTouch in but I have no experience with them and can't say they will work with this.

Firmware:
Given that you are upgrading the extruder and that the original firmware on the printer motherboard isn't modifiable you will have to upgrade the firmware. Firmware for the TFT will also need to be updated.
The Revo extruder can heat up to 300 °C, and the firmware allows up to 270 °C. Because of this, you can adjust the firmware to allow up to 300 °C, however, I have not done this and can't say how to do it.
I used digants motherboard and display codes that can be found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4294049
A useful guide on how to update the firmware:
Firmware settings:
BLTouch offsets:
- X: -5.00 mm
- Y: 22.00 mm
- Z: -4.50 mm
Home Offset:
- X: 0.00 mm
- Y: -5.00 mm
- Z: -2.91 mm
Extruder E-steps: 397 (check extruder manual)
Before printing Z-offset has to be adjusted with a piece of paper or your ideal offset technique.
