Modular Surface-Mounted GU10 Luminaire

I designed this 3D printable surface-mounted GU10 luminaire for my carport renovation project. The goal was to create a clean, modern-looking fixture that is easy to print, easy to install, and simple to maintain.

The housing is designed around a standard GU10 spotlight fixture and uses WAGO lever connectors for fast and reliable electrical connections. The square design provides a minimalist appearance while keeping all wiring neatly hidden inside the enclosure.

One of the key design goals was modularity. The fixture is available in two versions, allowing it to be used either as a standalone luminaire or as part of a daisy-chained lighting installation.

Available Versions

End Luminaire

A single-entry version intended for the last fixture in a lighting circuit. Power enters through one side and terminates inside the housing.

Loop-Through Luminaire

A dual-entry version that allows power to continue to the next fixture. This makes it possible to connect multiple luminaires in a row without the need for additional junction boxes.

Required Components (Per Luminaire)

GU10 Spotlight Fixture

Quantity: 1

Designed for:

GU10 Spotlight Fixture

WAGO Connectors

Quantity: 2

Designed for:

WAGO Lever Connectors

Each luminaire is designed to accommodate two WAGO connectors, making installation quick and tidy while supporting both the End Luminaire and Loop-Through Luminaire versions.

Features

  • Clean and modern square design

  • Hidden cable management

  • Compatible with standard WAGO lever connectors

  • Internal mounting space for 2 WAGO connectors

  • Available as End Luminaire and Loop-Through Luminaire

  • Integrated snap-fit assembly

  • Easy maintenance

  • No additional junction box required

  • Modular design for linking multiple luminaires

  • GU10 bulb can be replaced without opening the housing

  • Suitable for indoor and covered outdoor installations

Assembly Instructions

  1. Insert the GU10 spotlight fixture through the opening in the bottom housing.

  2. Secure the fixture using the supplied retaining ring. This locks the spotlight firmly in place and creates a stable installation.

  3. Wire the fixture using the WAGO connectors.

  4. Route the wiring through the cable entry points.

  5. Connect the top and bottom sections using the integrated snap-fit locking system.

  6. The housing can later be opened by carefully releasing the clips with a small flat-head screwdriver.

The snap-fit mechanism was designed to provide a secure connection while still allowing the enclosure to be serviced without damaging the printed parts.

Serviceability

The GU10 fixture used in this design was specifically selected because it allows the GU10 bulb to be replaced without removing or disassembling the housing.

Once installed, the bulb can be accessed directly from the front of the fixture, making maintenance quick and convenient.

Other GU10 fixtures may also fit this design, but only the fixture listed above has been tested and verified. If you choose to use a different fixture, minor modifications to the model may be required.

Printing Recommendations

Tested Material

I printed all parts in PLA, which has worked perfectly for my application. The luminaires are installed underneath a covered carport and are therefore protected from direct rain, snow, and prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Recommended Settings

  • Layer Height: 0.20 mm

  • Infill: 15–20%

  • Supports: Not required (depending on print orientation)

  • Material: PLA, PETG, or ASA

For installations exposed to direct weather conditions or higher temperatures, PETG or ASA may be a better choice.

Design Goals

When designing these luminaires, I wanted to achieve three things:

  • A clean and modern appearance.

  • Easy installation using readily available components.

  • A modular design that can grow from a single spotlight to a complete chain of connected luminaires.

The result is a practical and easy-to-build lighting solution that looks great while remaining accessible for makers and DIY enthusiasts.

Disclaimer

⚠ This project is intended for users familiar with electrical installations. Always disconnect power before working on wiring and ensure compliance with local electrical regulations. The designer accepts no responsibility for incorrect installation, modification, or use of this design.

A Personal Note

I originally designed these luminaires for a carport renovation where I wanted a more modern alternative to commercially available surface-mounted fixtures. Commercial solutions either did not match the style I was looking for or lacked the flexibility to easily create a continuous lighting line.

By combining a standard GU10 fixture, WAGO connectors, and a simple modular housing, I ended up with a lighting system that is easy to print, easy to install, and easy to maintain.

The ability to daisy-chain multiple luminaires, replace bulbs without opening the housing, and service the enclosure using the integrated snap-fit system were all important design goals from the beginning.

If you build one for your own project, I'd love to see the result. Happy printing! 😊
