Long ago I had the idea of using neodymium super magnets as fasteners or snaps to secure things like clothes, buckles and straps. My dream was to make it easier and more convenient to ‘button up’ and ‘unbutton’ things in a rapid and elegant way. Magnets seemed like the perfect thing for this, but at the time I lacked the technology to create a complex enclosure.
Several years later I picked up the project again, and with the magic of 3D printing designed this “magnet button”… Really though it's just a little symmetrical enclosure with six holes that clips around a standard 3x8mm super magnet. This effectively turns your magnet into a button that can then be sewn on to a garment, bag, strap, etc.
That's basically it. A lot of effort went into the intricacies of the design given that the scale is so small. I definitely recommend printing with an outer brim of at least 2mm.
2023-12-04 UPDATE: Added a modified version of the model that has a closed contact surface that prevents the magnet from escaping when the button goes through a drier, or in other situations where heat can soften the enclosure enough for the magnet to escape.
